Common gasoline engines and diesel engines are reciprocating piston internal combustion engines, which convert the chemical energy of the fuel into the mechanical energy of the piston movement and output power. Gasoline engine has the advantages of high speed, low quality, low noise, easy starting and low manufacturing cost; Diesel engine has high compression ratio, high thermal efficiency, better economic performance and emission performance than gasoline engine.
The engine is composed of two major mechanisms, namely the crank connecting rod mechanism and the valve mechanism, as well as five major systems, such as cooling, lubrication, ignition, fuel supply and starting system. The main components are cylinder block, cylinder head, piston, piston pin, connecting rod, crankshaft, flywheel and so on. The working chamber of the reciprocating piston internal combustion engine is called the cylinder, and the inner surface of the cylinder is cylindrical. The reciprocating piston in the cylinder is hinged with one end of the connecting rod through the piston pin, and the other end of the connecting rod is connected with the crankshaft, which is supported by the bearing on the cylinder block and can be turned in the bearing to form the crank connecting rod mechanism. When the piston moves back and forth in the cylinder, the connecting rod pushes the crankshaft to rotate. On the contrary, when the crankshaft rotates, the connecting rod journal moves in a circle in the crankcase and drives the piston up and down in the cylinder through the connecting rod. Each turn of the crankshaft, the piston runs once each time, and the volume of the cylinder is constantly changing from small to large, and then from large to small, and so on. The top of the cylinder is closed with the cylinder head. Intake and exhaust valves are provided on the cylinder head. Through the opening and closing of the inlet and exhaust valves, it is realized to charge inside the cylinder and exhaust outside the cylinder. The opening and closing of the inlet and exhaust valves are driven by the camshaft. The camshaft is driven by a crankshaft through a toothed belt or gear.
